Photographer's Note

The Craters of the Moon national monument is a very stark landscape within an already stark, desert like part of Idaho.

I was exploring the Spatter Cones when I spotted this man descending from Inferno Cone.

The image shows two examples of the very varied volcanic. In the center of a vast area of flood basalt there are cinder cones (such as Inferno cone) which look and feel like a heaps of ash, spatter cones which are formed from lava spat out from fissures and lava tubes.

There's also a very good Wikipedia article about this park.
