Photographer's Note

The area within Arches National Park has not only 'natural rock arches' but also majestic 'mesas'.
A mesa is Portuguese and Spanish for 'table'. Nature's elevated land area, with a flat top and often steep side cliffs. They are created by weathering and erosion of horizontally layered rocks, that are uplifted by tectonic activity. This 'differential erosion' causes the weaker rock types to be eroded away, leaving more resistant rocks topographically higher than their surroundings.
