Portland Skyline

After the three impressions of Portland’s weirdness, it’s time for a much more traditional cityscape. This photo was taken from Steel Bridge in the morning.

Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon (just over 650,000 inhabitants and about 2.4 million in the metropolitan area) and is located near the confluence of the Willamette (seen in the photo) and Columbia rivers. Portland was founded in 1845 near the end of the Oregon Trail, following the arrival of settlers in the 1830s. The original name was The Clearing, because of the large number of trees cut down for the town to grow. Two pioneers who co-founded Portland, Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts, and Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine, both wanted to rename the city after their hometowns. They decided to settle the matter with a coin toss, no need to tell who won. In the early 20th century Portland had the reputation of being one of the most dangerous ports in the world and a hub of organised crime. During and after WW2 the city’s economy got a significant boost and the bad reputation gradually disappeared. Nowadays, Portland is known for its progressive values and counterculture.
