Photographer's Note

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a United States National Park in the Guadalupe Mountains in southeastern New Mexico. The primary attraction of the park is the show cave, Carlsbad Cavern. Visitors to the cave can hike in on their own via the natural entrance.

Approximately two thirds of the park has been set aside as a wilderness area, helping to ensure no future changes will be made to the habitat.

THE PHOTO: I captured this large thunderstorm as it approached Carlsbad Caverns. The distant thunder was a soft rumble, but it was enough to keep the famous Carlsbad bats from exiting the cave this night. I had driven 4 hours to be here at sunset to watch the bats come out, but this storm prevented that. The local park rangers told us that bats do not fly in bad weather, and just stayed in the cave for the night.
