Photographer's Note

The valley oaks in Lake County are just leafing out, their reawakening a fitting representation of Easter. There are some ancient trees in Anderson Marsh, and this is one of them.

This majestic oak is 7-8 feet in diameter and at least 80 feet tall. To say it is immense is an understatement. We could estimate this tree to be about 500 years old.

I see this tree as 'Grandmother' partly because of it's age, and partly because it has undoubtedly produced many offspring over the years. Only a few survive as the oak requires large amounts of water, and the young ones often don't make it through their first few seasons of Lake County dry heat.

If you look closely, you'll see what may be a 'granddaughter' oak framed by the grandmother's outstretched 'arms' a hundred yards away. That smaller tree in the background is about 4 feet in diameter and just as tall. It is approximately 200 years old.

In Workshop you can see a closer shot at a different angle that includes what may be her fallen partner.
