Photographer's Note

I spent three of my favorite years so far stationed in southeast Arizona, and I photographed a lot of this corner of the state. One of my favorite drives was Catalina Highway, which winds its way from the Tucson suburbs up mountain sides all the way to Mount Lemmon.

This cactus is at the first lookout on Catalina Highway, Babad Doag. I almost never had this palce to myself, and it was far too close to the city to lend itself to an all-natural scene. But I always liked watching the lughts come on as the sun was going down.

On this day in particular, there was a lot of rain in the distance over the Tucson Mountains across town. The sky was on fire, and as I saw the color start to creep over the town, I redlined my engine to get up to Babad Doag and set up my tripod. I don't think I made any post-processing changes to the slide; it's pretty much the image I saw that night. This looks great as a 20x30 print; hope it looks good as a smaller digital image as well.
