Photographer's Note

Taken along the Fossil Springs Trail in the Coconino National Forest. The trail is part of the old mail route between Payson and Camp Verde. The Fossil Springs Trail diverges from the mail route about 400m (1,300 ft) and 6 km (4 miles) from the trailhead, just above the dry wash above the springs.

This photo was taken between the trail divergence and the springs and shows one of several rock pools and the dry wash of the upper Fossil Creek.

The springs have a flow of 4m³/sec (43 ft³/sec) at a temperature of 23°C (72°F) and the wash goes from dry to wide, flowing creek instantly. Within 100m of the springs is a natural pool which is a popular swimming place for hikers who have ignored the fact that they're going to need to climb out of the ravine at the end of the day.

The photo was cropped, resized and sharpened.
