Photographer's Note

The pinyon pine is a common sight on the Grand Canyon's south rim. It's amazing how these trees grow in the dry, cold, high areas on the rim. The trees are twisted as a defense against water loss: the twisted trunks lose less water than if they were straight (don't ask me why - I'm not very informed about botany).

This photo was taken on the Rim Trail somewhere east of Monument Creek Vista.
