Photographer's Note

Still scanned a photo taken in 1997 in Washington. This memorial Korea has the particularity to photography in the service of the duty of memory. In color that the visitor appeared at the bottom left. The wall of the memorial is a black granite portraits white or grey. It is the will of the architect that I wanted to abide by putting my picture in black and white.

On the Washington Mall, the park national monuments American who is the centre of the capital, between the White House and Congress, was inaugurated in 1995 a new book, dedicated to veterans of the war in Korea (1950-1953). Obviously inspired by the famous Vietnam Memorial located not far from there (and elsewhere directed by the same architect), it shall include in its device, in addition to the representation of a column running, a wall of black granite five hundred meters long. But rather than decipher the names of fallen soldiers, as on the monument commemorating the Vietnamese conflict, the visitor is confronted by a constellation of faces etched in stone.

Grouped according to the different body and the military services in the manner of a huge collage, 24,000 figures were transcribed by computer from photographs anonymous national archives. The technique produces an effect similar to a raster printing: although support for these portraits had nothing photographic, myriads of small holes criblant the surface of the granite reconstruct the distinctive characteristics of the photo image.
