Photographer's Note

Just one more memorial in Washington, D.C. and probably one of the better known. This is the Jefferson Memorial. We actually didnt visit it this year, we had already done that in 2014, but I still got this view of it from quite a large distance, close to the World War II Memorial (you can check the map view to see the distance). It also gives me the chance to tell some more about American history (which I am greatly interested in, in case you hadn't noticed yet :-))

The Jefferson Memorial is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), one of the most important American Founding Fathers, the first Secretary of State (under George Washington), the second Vice-President (under John Adams) and the third President of the United States (1801-1809), among many other positions. He earned his role as Founding Father as the main writer of the Declaration of Independence. He died on the same day as John Adams, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1826.

The memorial is located in West Potomac Park in between the Potomac river and the Tidal Basin. The Jefferson Memorial forms an axis together with the White House, an axis which crosses the National Mall just west of the Washington Monument. The memorial was built between 1939 and 1943 and designed by architect John Russell Pope, who was inspired by both the Pantheon in Rome and Jeffersons own design of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. A bronze statue of Jefferson was added in 1947. I added a photo of this statue in the WS. It was obviously taken in 2014. It also shows the coffering on the ceiling, which looks just like the ceiling of the Pantheon (the oculus is missing, though), which I will probably show in a couple of months as well, when I will be posting photos from my recent trip to Rome.
