Photographer's Note

The Skew Arch Bridge was built as part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, which helped travelers get across the Allegheny Mountains and into the Ohio Valley from the 1830s to the 1850s, before locomotives were strong enough to pull cars up the hills by themselves. This bridge was built over that railroad (i.e., the tracks themselves ran under the bridge) to accommodate other forms of wheeled transport on what became US Route 22.

The bridge (and the Allegheny Portage National Historic Site) are located in the Juniata area just west of Altoona in Pennsylvania.
