Photographer's Note

This past Sunday afternoon I was in New York City where I had journeyed to give a lecture. It was on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 87th Street that I came across an multidimensional scene — a plate glass window, framed on the bottom by photographs of adult Tae Kwon Do athletes; in the window a scene of miniature athletes, and their parents lined up to oversee their children. The children were engaged in a kicking exercise. Armed with only an iPhone, I quickly snapped a series of photos, trying to catch the moment of a kick.

According to Wikipedia, Taekwondo is a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks. Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by various Korean martial artists, as a blend of the indigenous Korean fighting styles of taekkyeon, gwonbeop, and subak, with influence from foreign martial arts as well.

The sidewalk on which I was walking was raised almost 2 m above the level of the Taek Won Do Center. A wrought iron banister with vertical parallel bars is reflected in the window. Using Photoshop, I lightened the tinted window slightly in order to show the interior, and illuminate the critical kick.
