I am posting this picture to thank the many friends who emailed or called to check on my status during Hurricane Ike knocked down electricity in my home town Houston.
Actually, I am alive.
This picture is among the set that I took on the famous Seawall Blvd. at 12th Street of Galveston Island at 5:00 PM Friday Sept 12, 2008, eight hours belore Ike landed.
Sorry about the delay due to my loss of light. I am uploading this photo using a borrowed pc and internet account of a friend who lives hundred miles from the effected area.

Hello Than,
This is a spectacular shot of the unspeakable flooding Hurricane Ike caused in the area. But as you put it, you are alive, and the total loss of life was quite minimal, considering the material damage wrought by the hurricane. I remember walking along the flood wall on a visit in 2005. I was astonished by the 17 foot wall, but apparently it helped a great deal. Including the stop sign and the street signs was a very good choice. They add highlight, and they indicate the location.

Hello Thanh,
this is a shot of great documentary value, it helps me (middle Europe inhabitant) to understand what was going on and as you are writing in your note - it was 8 hours before the strike.
The worst wind, I can remember, pulled down about 20 roofs in our village and the look out of the window resembled something like shots from the eye of tornado, some people even reported they have seen the column, but it was our local version, something you would smile at.
I hope that the people and the city are recovering from the disaster in Houston,

Thanks for sharing this amazing view of Galveston before Ike struck. The details are powerful, especially the wave, and the street sign showing you were right next to the seawall. I really hope things will return to normal soon in the Houston area. Sending my best wishes to everyone affected...

thank you for keeping us up to date with a "portrait" of "your friend" Ike and that you still believe and live by Elie Wiesel's "Not to transmit an experience is to betray it."
we should all try that (at least once).
