Photographer's Note

This is another detail shot inside Robert Brady's house in Cuernavaca. Very Mexican.

Travelling in Mexico, Death is never far away. Which other country (apart from maybe Belgium?) would have a procession of skeletons on its national day?

Death is present, not just on the Day of the Dead, but in everyday life. Have you ever tried the Bread of Death (pan de la muerto)? Or taken a metro ride to the Baranca de los Muertos? Oh, where but in Mexico?

A merry procession of bones...death as a celebration!

ROBERT BRADY (1928-1986) was a rich American collector of fine and decorative arts. He was born in Iowa, lived in Venice for a couple of years and finally settled in Cuernavaca in 1962.

In his extravagant mansion he assembled a rich mosaic of contrasting styles and epochs. The wildly colorful rooms are exactly as Brady left them.

To be seen are works by famous 20th century artists, such as Rufino Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, Henri Matisse, Giorgio De Chirico and Graham Sutherland.

But the collection of more than 1,300 pieces also includes Mexican colonial furniture and statuary, prehispanic objects as well as art from Africa, the Americas, Oceania, India and the Far East displayed in the fourteen rooms open to the public.

CUERNAVACA is a rather affluent provincial city, a couple of hours south from Mexico City. There are a handful of interesting colonial buildings, including some of the oldest churches in America.

The city is steeped in conquistador history, but it's most interesting sight is probably the extravagant Casa Robert Brady, which houses an eclectic collection of art and artefacts in the original collector's house.

But for me Cuernavaca is - above all - where Malcolm Lowry wrote Under the Volcano.

"No se puede vivir sin amar - as that estupido wrote on my house!"
