Photographer's Note

The Consul was guiltily climbing the Calle Nicaragua.

It was if he were toiling up some endless staircase between houses. [...] It was hot as a furnace too out on the street and the Consul sweated profusely. Away! Away! He was not going very far away, nor to the top of the hill. There was a lane branching to the left before you reached Jacques's house, leafy, no more than a cart-track at first, then switchback, and somwhere along that lane to the right, not five minutes' walk, at a dusty corner waited a cool nameless cantina. [...] And this cantina would be open.

This was where he was going (the lane was plainly in sight now, a dog guarding it) to have in peace of couple of necessary drinks unspecified in his mind, and be back again before Yvonne had finished her bath. It was just possible too of course that he might meet -

But suddenly the Calle Nicaragua rose up to meet him.
The Consul lay face downward on the deserted street.

- from Malcolm Lowry (1947), Under the Volcano, chapter three

This picture shows the Calle Humboldt in Cuernavaca, i.e. the Calle Nicaragua in the novel.

The house where Malcolm Lowry lived (now destroyed?), was downhill to the left, Laruelle's house (now a hotel) is just a bit uphill here to the right. There's a picture of Laruelle's house in the workshop.

This steep stretch of road must have been where the Consul falls down drunk in only the third chapter.

CUERNAVACA is a rather affluent provincial city, a couple of hours south from Mexico City. There are a handful of interesting colonial buildings, including some of the oldest churches in America. Its most interesting sight is probably the extravagant Casa Robert Brady, which houses an eclectic collection of art and artefacts in the original collector's house.

But for me Cuernavaca is - above all - where Malcolm Lowry wrote (his first version of) Under the Volcano.

"No se puede vivir sin amar - as that estupido wrote on my house!"
