Photographer's Note

Walking up an alley in La Paz, looking across a parched vacant lot, we see many typical Paceρo elements:

-- a black rooftop tinaco (the municipal water system is not pressurized 24/7, so everyone has a reservoir that provides water to their home);

-- a rooftop LP gas tank (there is no municipal natural gas system; these tanks are refilled from a delivery truck);

-- exposed concrete rebar, something Anthony Bourdain once called "the universal symbol of optimism," to provide a tie-in to the current structure should the day ever come when one wants to add an upstairs space;

-- a satellite television antenna;

-- a Tamarisk or "Salt Cedar" tree on the right, an invasive species that survives quite well in the desert climate;

and above all, in the midst of it all, ART, "Arte Urbano."

I love La Paz.
