Photographer's Note

Closer to the waterfront, we are looking at the intersection where Rumi Mehmet Paşa (Greek Mehmet Pasha) Street makes a T with Darende Street. I took this photo because stone houses like the one we see are rare in Istanbul.

Rum Mehmet Pasha was an Ottoman stateman who served as a vizier during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror between 1466 and 1469. He was the child of a local Greek family from Constantinople, and was later taken over by the system of recruitment and became a Muslim. With the encouragement of Karamanli Mehmet Pasha, the counsel of the Conqueror who would become the Grand Vizier in 1477, he was dismissed and was strangled in 1470.
