Photographer's Note

A late afternoon shot of the incredible eroded layers of volcanic ash at Goreme from my hotel terrace. I have tried to sharpen the slightly oof fg houses a little but the bg is fine. Wasn't sure whether to clone out the motion blurred bird in the sky at left of centre, or not.

There are 7 dormant and extinct volcanoes around Goreme. Erciyes Dag in the east and Hasan Dag in the west spewed out thousands of tons of volcanic ash over the centuries. Both are around 80 km from Goreme. The bg mountain seen here is not a volcano but the eroded remnants of a thick layer of ash. More info on the geology of Cappadocia here:
