Photographer's Note

I found this ruined irrigation system not far from where I am staying here in Saudi Arabia. When flying over the country you can see a few green circular fields, that is being irrigated by a system like this, but once on the ground you don't see many still in use.

I have travelled by car from Bahrain via Riyadh to Qassim a few times a stretch of roughly 700km, and I believe that I have seen less than 5 active systems, whereas I have seen hundreds of abandoned ones like this one.

I read somewhere that most of the water reserves they have used where non renewable water pools, which is the reason that the government now have given up on the irrigation project, so in the very near future Saudi will once again have to import all their crops.

Pleae note the 4 siloes in the distance, this you can also see spread out over the dessert, I guess they had plenty of ambitions when they started out.
