The mountain of Masada contains a series of palaces built in the time of King Herod. It was the place where the last Jewish resistance took refuge after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman army in 70 AD. There resisted for months and unable to contain the thrust of the Roman army, they decided to commit suicide rather than surrender and be condemned to slavery or die in the Circus arena.
It is a highly respected place and national emblem of the state of Israel.
Historically only access is had to the top through a long narrow road called "the way of the snake", but now you can access the top of the mountain by this modern cable car, which allows access to people of any physical condition.
It is a highly recommended visit.
