Photographer's Note

The Silk Road: this rare monument from the Ghaznavid period (around the year 1000 AD) is a relic of a former settlement on the Silk road, Sang Bast near Mashad, Iran. The Arslan Jadhib gonbad (mausoleum) and the desert light tower still stand. The terrible Gengis Khan and his warriors always left such buildings intact. One of the branches of the Silk Road passed from the Caspian seashore to Tus/ Mashad, Sang Bast and on to Merv/ Turkmenistan. Marco Polo did not pass here, he took the route through Jazd and Herat/Afghanistan.
