Photographer's Note

I covered this event late last year.
For those not familiar with Motherwell (where I live) the town and the Steel industry are linked in a deep history that was about to come to an end.
Its was a miserable day with the rain belting down the whole length of the march. I walked around 6 miles in the rain. Thankfully both cameras had rain covers on..
Cheap Chinese imports and an unsupportive national Government who bought the steel for a major bridge building project from abroad helped bring the last remaining steel works in Motherwell to the brink of imminent closure..
These three chaps are of the new generation of steelmen captured here with the Dalziel works in the background. Where they are standing is on the site of the long since demolished Ravenscraig one of British Steels shining stars till Maggie got her claws in it..

For now a bit of political gerrymandering has saved the steel works but unless the national government and UK government start buying British steel again who knows how long it will last.
