Photographer's Note

It's been an incredibly long time since I last uploaded a photo here to TrekEarth. I've been busy setting up a business, learning to be a dad to my 11 month old daughter, and generally just getting on with life!

An even bigger change is that I've switched to Nikon :-) After much research, testing and discussion with colleagues I felt Nikon would meet my needs better. So I went ahead and sold all my Canon gear and had a fun shopping spree!

I thought I'd post a few recent images. This one here was taken this weekend on my first outing with a D200 and Tokina 12-24 F4 lens. We're having a last flurry of winter here. Temperatures down to -3c which is very rare in Shetland due to the temperate effects of the gulf stream.

This shot I guess is an exercise in exposure and texture. Camera meters have a tendency to underexpose snow as it gets fooled by all that brightness, leaving you with a dull, grey image. This shot was metered in A-priority with a compensation of +1.3 EV. An exposure of 1/10s @ F16 was bang on. From the moment I composed this I always planned for it to be black and white

Used a Hoya Pro-1D Polariser. Should have used an ND to reduce shutter speed and increase blur in water, but never mind!

For posting here I used a sharpenning technique posted on TE some time ago. I wanted to see if it made a good job of those branches, and given that it is at 72dpi, I think it's done quite well.

It's good to be back :-) I hope to see some old friends dropping by

Best
Craig

PS I'll update my equipment profile soon.
