Photographer's Note

This castle was built (14th Century) as a monastery according to an order by Alfonso VI in honour of the saints Servando and Germano. But due to the fact that it is close to the Alcαntara bridge it was transformed into a fortress for the defence of the town.

It is situated opposite the Alcαntara bridge (the one in the photo). It was reconstructed on the site of the ruins of the Arab castle. It is one of the finest examples of Mudejar military architecture in Spain. The cylindrical towers and crenellations with its horseshoe arches. The gateways are quite Mudejar.

in the upper right corner you can see the Academia de Infanterνa (Infantry Academy), built in the Cerros de San Blas.

The castle now it's a youth hostel.
