Photographer's Note

I found this one while browsing in my scan archives and I didn't resist posting it. It was shot from the window of the students residence where I lived during my university years, which was inside a National Guard barracks in the oldest part of Lisbon, very near the castle of So Jorge, the only one in town. It is probably one of my first experiences with positive film (at that time I shot only in B&W, because it was much less expensive and it could be developed by myself). I am not sure if it was shot in 1984 or 1983.

It is also one of the first scans I did, more than 3 years ago, and although I am not fully satisfied with the PP, I am glad verifying that I evolved much since then (I posted the old PP as a WS). Thank you TE and TE'rekers!

Quite off of topic, here it goes a little story that happen to me and some of my colleagues on the street outside on these years: we were taking a walk on the street, quite deserted that day, when we saw a Rolls Royce (or was it a Bentley?) that was coming in our direction very slowly and finally it stopped near us. Such a car in Lisbon is already an uncommon sight, even more in that part of the town and having only the driver inside. When we look up the street, we couldn't believe our eyes: Prince Charles and Princess Diana were walking slowly coming down the street in our direction, completely alone and relaxedly, just like a common couple of tourists, if it wasn't for the formal clothes. It was so unexpected that all the three of us must have looked like "a donkey gazing towards a palace" (a Portuguese expression for a stupefied astonishment). I don't even remember if we salute them or even returned back their smiles when they passed closer to us. That was it... I was never that closer to a notorious international public figure afterwards. We only understood what happen later that day on the TV news: making use of a "hole" in the agenda of their visit to Lisbon, they had gone visiting the castle and decided to take a little walk by themselves, probably motivated by the almost complete absence of people on the area.

I bet that if I was one of those persons that thrills much by seeing famous persons I wouldn't have been so lucky. My second vision of a royal figure happened also by pure hazard. We had arrived in Bangkok some hours earlier, after more than 24 hours of airplanes and airports. After a nap in the hotel, we went outside to get some fresh air (as if there is such a thing in Bangkok :-), just to find the street and the big park nearby completely full with people looking like they were there waiting for something for hours. Suddenly the crowd begin showing signs of great agitation when a yellow Rolls Royce appeared - it was the Thai king, who was commemorating an anniversary (I don't know if it was his own or of his coronation or both). It appears that we had a much clear view of that king that we barely knew that existed than many of those people that were waiting there for hours just to get a glimpse of him.
