Photographer's Note

Wooden crosses at the base of the Vilnius TV Tower in memory of the 14 unarmed civilians who died here protesting against its occupation by the Soviet military. The massacre on January 13, 1991 also left 700 injured, some from bullet wounds and some crushed by Soviet tanks. The Tower, the tallest building in Lithuania at 326 metres, and the crosses are poignant symbols of Lithuanian independence.
