Today we’re back to the medieval town of Urbino, capital of Le Marche, and this is the piece de resistance of the town: il Palazzo Ducale – the Duke’s palace. It is often referred to as a Renaissance jewel and it is not difficult to see why. The idea of the Ducal Palace was conceived by Federico of Montefeltro, who, pioneered a new way of thinking. Instead of a castle anchored to the old military principles of attack and defence, he wanted a palace open to the circulation of people and ideas. So he commissioned some of the most important architects of the era to transform his ideas into reality. Thus a palace with a solid structure and externally harmonious slenderness, together with functional interiors was built. The palace can be entered from the other side of the faηade – after quite a steep climb – and houses the National Gallery of Le Marche.
