Castello di Ancaiano
It stands, overlooking the valley, on an impervious rocky spur. Castle of the noble Ancaiani family, built to defend the south side of the ancient duchy. The fortress was built, probably in the 11th century, by noble Ancaiani, lords of the castle and surrounding lands, as well as the nearby abbey of San Pietro in the valley of which were always commendatory abbots. The first documented news dates back to 1241 and is contained in the deed of donation to the municipality of Spoleto by Emperor Frederick II. The Cardinal linked to Raniero Capocci, in 1247, confirmed its possession to the ducal city. It is dominated by a mighty tower with massive architecture, with a complex decoration with white stone barbacans. Still at the end, on the lookout terrace, a small room characterizes the whole of the building. From the tower the walls descend to the inhabited area, characterized by the tall square keep, with the typical triangular structure of the hill castle.
