Ospedale del Ceppo
The Ceppo hospital is an ancient hospital in Pistoia, founded in the 13th century. According to legend, the name derives from a miraculously flowered stock during the winter, which according to the indications given by an apparition of the Madonna, would have shown the place where to found the hospital for the pious spouses Antimo and Bendinella. Alternatively, a derivation of the name from the hollow chestnut "stump" used to collect the offers was thought. It was the city hospital until 21 July 2013, when it was replaced by the new San Jacopo Hospital, located in the south of the city.
On the faηade, above the arcades of the loggia, there is a terracotta frieze painted in bright colors and glazed, made by Santi Buglioni, while rounds in the same technique are inserted in the arches of the arches. The frieze is divided into panels and illustrates the seven works of mercy (Dressing the naked, Housing the pilgrims, Visiting the sick, Visiting the prisoners, Burying the dead, Feeding the hungry, Drinking the thirsty). The scenes depicting the works are interspersed with the figures of Virtue (Prudence, Faith, Charity, Hope and Justice), framed by decorated pilasters. Two harpies on the corners complete the work. The frieze was executed starting in 1525, commissioned by the Florentine expeditionary Leonardo Buonafede, who appears in the scenes in a white dress with a black cape, presiding over the daily activities of the hospital. The last panel on the right was replaced in 1586 with a new one, executed by Filippo di Lorenzo Paladini, without glazing. On it, Bartolomeo Montichiari, the sibling of the time, is represented in the place of the Goodfede.
