Photographer's Note

St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is clearly one of the most important temples in the world. It is believed to be built over a tomb of St Peter, the first disciple of Jesus and the first Pope. In 1939 Margherita Guarducci, an archaeologist, has accidentally discovered under the main altar of the basilica an ancient tomb with inscription Petros eni, meaning Peter is here. After further investigation, during a General Audience on 26 June 1968, Pope Paul VI said: 'The relics of Saint Peter have been identified in a way we believe convincing.'

Here you can read more about the St Peter Tomb and about an event few years ago in Rome during which Pope Francis has showed the relics of St Peter to the public.
