Photographer's Note

Via Appia in Rome is one the most fascinating place: just at the beginning the so called IV Miglio, the zone in which some tombs were buit by many rich roman families, there is the big circular Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, the wife of Crasso. The marble monument became the pivot of the medieval castle of Caetani Family, built in the XIV century to control the most important roman street toward the south of Italy. Now the brown colour of the vulcanic stone of the castle and its church of S. Nicola (on the right of the photo) and the white mass of the roman grave converse with the green of the country and the blue of the sky. Balancing light and shadows is the most difficult thing of this photo.
