little lake
The location of a melted metal, called zirconium, led to the conclusion that the two lakes were not created (as previously believed) by a volcanic eruption, but from the fall of a meteorite on Earth, approximately 10.000 years ago, which created the twin craters. For this reason the Zerelia lakes are a point of attraction for many geologists. The distance between them is 250 m. The biggest has a diameter of 300m and depth of about 8 m, whereas the smaller one has a diameter of 250 m and depth approximately 6 m. Until today much research is conducted in order to find the meteorite. Aside from consisting of an amazing wetland, the two lakes are of a great archaeological interest, because of old information which suggests that in one of them was the temple of goddess Itonida. - Copyright © wondergreece.gr
