Just A Hamburg Cityscape

Heres just a cityscape from Hamburg, taken from the Niederbaumbrcke Bridge at the edge of Speicherstadt. It offers a view of the Binnenhafen (Inner Harbour) with a remarkably low water level, which may still be caused by last years drought in Europe. The buildings in the background are located in Hamburg-Altstadt (Old Town).

The tower at left is part of the St.-Nikolai-Kirche (St. Nicholas Church), a former Lutheran church, which was destroyed in the bombing of Hamburg in 1943. Only some of the walls and the 147-metre tall tower, the tallest building in the world from 1874-1876, still stand today. An elevator to a 75-metre high observation platform was installed in the tower in 2005, the crypt now houses an exhibition on Operation Gomorrah, the Allied codename for the bombing of Hamburg in WWII. The other church is St. Katharinen (St. Catherines Church), one of five Lutheran churches in Hamburg. The oldest parts date back to the 13th century, but most of the building is from the 15th century. Located opposite the historic harbour area on the River Elbe. it was traditionally a church for seamen. The church was also heavily damaged in World War II, but restored in the 1950s.
