Speicherstadt

It’s time for some World Heritage again. The area in Hamburg seen here is called Speicherstadt, literally Warehouse City. Located on a number of small islands in the Elbe river in Hamburg Port, it is the largest warehouse district in the world and was built between 1883 and 1927. The warehouses are built in Gothic Revival style and stand on timber-pile foundations. About half of the area was destroyed during WWII, but rebuilt in later decades. The area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2015 and is now part of the HafenCity quarter, the old part of the port of Hamburg which is now being redeveloped.
