Photographer's Note

This is the last post of my series about Auto- und Uhrenwelt, Schramberg, Black Forest. This very nice museum displays German means of transportation from 1945 until 1970, so the newest car will be the latest post.

NSU Motorenwerke AG of Neckarsulm (for which the abbreviation stands) was an outstanding producer of two-wheelers in the interwar period as well as after WW II. They produced everything that had two wheels like motorbikes, scooters or bicycles and were the world's leading producer in 1955.

In 1953, NSU developed their first post-war compact car, the NSU Prinz, which was followed by Sport-Prinz (partly visible to the left) and Prinz 4. Sport-Prinz gave the base for the development of NSU Wankel-Spider, the world's first ever serial car with a Wankel or rotary piston engine.

Their greatest achievement from 1967 was NSU Ro 80, a limousine for the upper middle class with a rotary piston engine of 115 HP, an outstanding body work with a very low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.37 and revolutionary design, 15 years in advance to any other car of that time. Unfortunately, there were numerous engine problems, and there was a saying that Ro 80 drivers would greet themselves on autobahn with a certain number of fingers up, meaning they had already employed that many engines.

In 1969, NSU merged with Auto Union GmbH to become Audi NSU Auto Union AG, and no more NSU cars were produced.
