Photographer's Note

I took this shot this afternoon from the Swiss side of Laufenburg, though since the backdrop is Germany and I've yet to post anything German, I've opted to call it Germany!
Laufenburg is a pretty town nestling on the banks of the Rhine, straddling the Swiss-German border. The Rhine itself forms the country border along this stretch, so that the town is divided by the river into a Swiss part and a German part, though connected by bridges.
The town itself was founded in 1207 by Rudolf II von Habsburg and remained Austrian until 1801 when Napoleon made a few changes. The town is full of delightful steep alleyways and buildings dating from the middle ages. Here you can see the church on the Swiss side and in the distance the German part of the town with its own church and spire.
