Photographer's Note

I havent posted any pictures of local castles for a while, so having visited Burg Rtteln this afternoon I thought Id take the opportunity to add it to my local castles theme.

Despite the blue sky it was a bitingly cold afternoon, at least in the shade, but the cold air and sunshine was refreshing. The castle is thought to have been standing in some form since the beginning of the 11th century and had various owners in the ensuing years. As with all the other castles in the area, the building was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1356 and was somewhat later reconstructed before being the site of a quarry in the 17th century. Today it is just a ruin but the two towers can be climbed to give pleasant views towards the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Alps on a clear day.
