Photographer's Note

As it was such a beautiful day, this afternoon I headed off to the Chβteau de Landskron, a local ruin which I often visit when I have a spare couple hours. The chateau is footsteps away from the Swiss border and it’s a short but steep climb to reach it. Today the castle is just a ruin but from its tower, which is still intact, one can enjoy open views across the landscape of Alsace.

The chateau was first built sometime before 1297 and was widely extended in 1516 before suffering damage in the great earthquake of 1356 which shook the whole area. Various ownership disputes ensued over the years and the castle was again destroyed in 1813 by the Austrians and Bavarians fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte. Since 1984 the castle has belonged to the Pro-Landskron association who have invested in substantial renovations, some of which are visible in this shot.
