Photographer's Note

An evening panorama of the French town of Saumur reflected in the waters of the Loire, with the castle and the church St-Pierre as the main highlights. The castle was largely built in the latter half of 14C by Louis I, duke of Anjou. In 1480, the ownership of the castle passed over to the French Crown. In 2001, a huge chunk of the outer fortifications collapsed down the hill towards the river.

Among the famous people born in Saumur were Coco Chanel, Fanny Ardant, and Dominique Pinon (the latter actor is known by the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet). Marquis de Sade was briefly imprisoned in the Chβteau de Saumur (then a jail) in 1768.
