Photographer's Note

Another picture of Guyane, that little piece of France in South America.
Beaches are actually not very beautiful (at least by tourist standards!) and the sea looks always brown and dirty, because of the mud coming to the sea from all the big rivers (including the Amazon). An exception is this beach located on the Iles du Salut (Salvation Islands). They are located about ten miles from the shore, in the open sea, and here the waters are clear and blue, like a lagoon.
The Iles du Salut are actually three islands : Ile Saint-Joseph, where this picture is taken, Ile Royale (that appears on the horizon in the middle) and Ile du Diable (Devil's Island, on the right). From the outside, the islands appear covered in palm trees. On Ile Saint Joseph, you find this beautiful white sand beach, and a natural rock pool allows to take a swim without fearing the sharks or the strong water currents. A paradise indeed.

But there is more to the Iles du Salut than meet the eyes. A few steps away from this little paradise, you still find the shadows of a much darker and not very glorious history. You can see it here. For the moment, enjoy this moment of rest and leisure!
