A bicycle trip to Diksmuide but first the bicycle on the train and then further with our bike.

This tower, originally inaugurated on August 24, 1930, stands on the banks of the Yser stream, near the center of Diksmuide on the territory of the Kaaskerke district.
The tower is written on the four sides of the monumental foot No more war, in the four languages of the warring parties of the western front during the First World War:
Plus jamais de guerre, No more War, Nie wieder Krieg.

The IJzertoren is in the first place a memorial to the Flemish casualties of the First World War,

A few years after the dynamism of the original tower on 15 March 1946, a new and much higher (84 meter) tower was built a few meters away. In 1950 the Paxpoort or Gate of Peace was built with the remains of the blown tower on the forecourt, in the IJzerbedevaart meadow.
The ruins of the old tower (at the time about 50 m high) are carefully preserved as a lasting testimony. Here is a crypt, to which the remains of some well-known Flemish front soldiers were transferred between 1930 and 1937. These are Renaat De Rudder, Joe English, Frans Van der Linden, Firmin Deprez, Frans Kusters, Hubert Willems and Juul De Winde. The Van Raemdonck brothers lie in one coffin together with the Walloon soldier Amι Fiιvez. The ruin, together with the crypt, was completely restored in 1997.
The construction of the second tower took place from 1952 to 1965. The architect was Robert Van Averbeke. The tower has 462 staircases, and was built with 325,000 bricks, 388 tones of iron and 3000 m³ of reinforced concrete.
The founding of the Iron tower (IJzertoren) came about at the time thanks to a great common sense of the people, and was financed with collected voluntary contributions from numerous individual Flemish people and associations.

I hope that you enjoy it
