Photographer's Note

MULLEM is a very small Flemish village near Oudenaarde in a slightly hilly area that is called the Flemish Ardennes.

Mullem is known for its yellow/ochre houses and has an interesting link to the de Gerlache family.

Adrien De Gerlache (1866-1934) was a famous explorer of Antarctica. His son Gaston de Gerlache (1919-2006) later followed in his footsteps and he was the mayor of Mullem for 18 years too.

Having said this, I have to admit I'd never heard of Mullem until we visited the area and our b&b owner suggested it as a possibly interesting place to visit.

THIS PICTURE shows a typical example of Mullem architecture, closely crop, playing with lines, colours and shades.
