Photographer's Note

A photo from a visit to Vienna in May. The Spanish Riding School in the domed Hofburg was behind me on the other side of Michaelerplatz as I stood pointing my camera down Kohlmarkt. Cyclists and horse-drawn tourist coaches passed by unceasingly, and I was lucky to capture two sharply. Later, looking at several photos I took around this spot, I noticed the man in the white shirt continued to stand there, gazing down the street, as if with a sense of wonder.

Kohlmarkt today is full of expensive and 'exclusive' chain shops housed in many of its magnificent historic buildings, such as Chanel, Gucci, Armani, Vuitton and you can imagine the rest. 'Elegant' is the word used to describe the mood here, and the shoppers emerging with their large boutique bags would like to think of themselves as 'elegant' too. Chopin and Haydn lived in the street, and of course there is still the famous Demel chocolate shop, which was established in 1786, two years before the first British settlement was founded on the shores of Sydney Harbour.
