Photographer's Note

Most postcards and pictures from Girokaster, also on TE, show the five street corner. You can see it also in my view from the castle, in the lower right corner. I had a bit of bad luck as it is just renovated and covered with the green scaffolding. On the other hand , I do not know why it is so popular. I liked other places more.

Gjirokastλr is a city in southern Albania, situated in a valley between the Gjerλ mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site described as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate". The city is overlooked by Gjirokastλr Fortress, where the National Folklore Festival is held every five years. It is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha and notable writer Ismail Kadare. Along Muslim and Orthodox Albanians, the city is also home to a substantial Greek minority.

Here you can see the architecture of Gjirokaster that I found original and characteristic - the quite high buildings with interesting roofs made of shingles.
I hope you like this less known view.
You can see better such a house here.
