Sapa, Vietnam: deal of the month

In “October 2005” Issue, Condι Nast TRAVELER magazine published its “October Deals of the Month” on page 80 as following:

These Asian retreats — urban, hillside, and coastal — offer more value in the shoulder season: Singapore, Sapa, Bali.

Tiny Sapa, surrounded by alpine vistas, terraced rice fields, and colorful hill tribes, is Vietnam’s northern gem. Settled as a French hill station in the early 1920s, the town is now a popular base for trekking and motorbike touring. In the warm, sunny days of October, the rice is ready for harvest, spreading a golden blanket over the landscape. Guided treks and homestays, organized by most hotels, are typically led by H’mong women and offer close encounters in villages populated by the Black H’mong, Red Dao, and Tay tribes. The area’s ethnic mosaic is at its most vivid at the weekly Saturday Market in the town center, where the indigenous people come in full traditional dress to sell silver jewelry, embroidered goods, and trinkets.

How

Take the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao-Cai ($8-$13); Sapa hotels run free buses for the 90-minute ride to town.

P.S.

Rent a motorbike and head to Heaven’s Gate, an overlook with breathtaking views.
