Photographer's Note
another oldie
---
This picture was taken on board of the old slow, rickety rackety ferry from Rach Gia to the island of Phu Quoc.
Most passengers are inside, the boy is outside, on deck, looking in. He had the better position.
---
Phϊ Quốc is a large Vietnamese island west of the Mekong Delta, not far south of Cambodia.
It is famed for its black pepper and fish sauce. Both combine sublimely with locally caught squid. Mmm...
These days tourism is a big part of local life, especially since the airport was opened for regular air links to Ho Chi Minh City (and Rach Gia). Plans are under way to open up Phu Quoc airport for international connections.
I guess that old rickety rackety ferry doesn't run anymore...

I was in doubt whether to go for the colour version or the bl/w one. I include the bl/w in the WS, so you can let me know if I made the wrong choice.
With apologies to the bl/w fans.

Dear Benny,
That's exactly what I look for at TE: A perfect travel shot with local spices.
I can't say you made a wrong choice: The colored version gives better texture of the face. But overall, I must say I prefer the b&w, largely beacuse the natural framing looks much more appealing in the monochrome version.

Hello Benny,
I like the rendering of the colors on this shot. It makes me think about cross-treatment as formerly sometimes performed with color slides.
Nice also this frame inside the frame composition.
An original portrait.

Hello Benny,
The window frames the young boy very effectively. The elongated trapezoidal shape adds to the mystique. It also reminds me of a photo From the Vaporetto that I had submitted a couple of years ago.

you shouldn't have doubted - the colour version is definitely the better one! there is this great contrast between the warm tones "inside" the frame (therefore outside the bus) and the blueish colours of the bus window, well, it really adds to the picture and it would be a shame to lose it with a conversion.
you composed the photo really well, a frame within the frame, which highlights perfectly the deep and rich contrast between light and shadow.
ah, Vietnamese cuisine...

A simplistic masterpiece. The frame within a frame and the excellent use of light work together to capture a timeless feeling.
Cheers!

Hi Benny,
Not the easiest photo with this POV and the strong light and dark, but you managed well, especially with film it is harder to correct the light. I like the sepia tone, makes it a bit of a classic and remenicent of old, his attitude is also very fitting for a strong charactor. I like it.
And Happy Luna New Year.

Hi Benny,
Fantastic, I agree with Cristina, the colour version has something, it must be the old film tones, it is like a lost frame from a film shot in an exotic location, like a Klaus Kinsky film or something.
This is clever, expressive and creative...
Cheers

Hi Benny, A really nice sepia photo offering great light, the portrait of the lad is excellent & his disinterested expression looks wonderful as it is so natural, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Dear Benny
I like this sepia version better (I like this being called a sepia version than a coloured version). But what I admire is your composition & framing...frame within the frame 7 your exposure, not easy but done very well! The DOF, used shallow suits this shot well. Good work, my friend!
Best,
Angshu

Hi Benny
you have a broad variety of genres you focus on. As a "street" buff I am this one catched my eyes. Intelligent framing, wonderful use of light (not easy with light coming from the backside) and warm bokeh. Even the boy poses for you he seems relaxed (not a big deal this shooting, he thinks. Keep making good pictures. M.

oh, that's a nice one, too - that TV-like screen arrangement makes me feel like watching a movie on the 1940s china...
