Photographer's Note

On board the slow and crowded ferry from Rach Gia to the island of Phu Quoc two people felt out of place: one was me, a white guy with a camera, the other one was
...the northener.

---

The north and the south became reunified in 1975 the end of the American War, but culturally, socially and linguistically the vast differences remain, with both parties feeling somewhat superior, claiming to have the best food, the richest history, the best manners, etc.

Note: Often not two, but three cultural regions are identified (north, south, central), a division which was also recognised in French Indochina.

The man in the picture didn't utter one word during the 8-hour trip, but his appearance made it clear that he was indeed a northener, especially the hat, which is reminiscent of the (northern) army and which a 'true southener' would never wear.

Next up, I'll be going through my archive to find the southener...

scan from analogue print, dust particles visible which I decided to leave in, as they add to the spy feel...
