RENOVATION of the Meridien Changi hotel, a stark
white building with heavily tinted windows that easily
went unnoticed, was completed in April 2004. Today, the
renamed Changi Village Hotel has become a landmark,
lending character to its surroundings.

The architect’s brief from the owners, was to
transform the old hotel into a ‘hip and modern’
destination for business travellers and a resort-like haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Accordingly, the hotel’s white exterior was kept intact but devised an ingenious visual treat to draw attention away from the plain facade.

The balconies were originally designed for the
installation of either clear or frosted laminated glass. For variation, colours were considered. As colours in the standard glass palette were muted, acrylics seemed the only alternative, initially. With the Vanceva range of colour interlayers which can be used either as single colour or in combination for greater colour options.

Rooms on the 5th and 6th floors were fitted with
laminated glass balconies in yellow, orange, red, blue,
green and purple colors. Supporting structures were kept to a minimum, ensuring that the frameless glass panels provided an unobstructed view of the sea, from within the room. After the initial anxiety when stepping onto the laminated glass balconies, guests are immediately enthralled by a sense of lightness and freedom, akin to being in mid air.

Higher up on the uppermost floor of the hotel, designated rooms were fitted with covered balconies in
clear laminated glass. On these ‘boxed-up’ balconies,
guests can bask in the sunshine, enjoy the wide-angle view of the sea and the surrounding greenery, and yet remain refreshingly cool due to the airconditioning from within.

At night, the sunken light tubes placed along the
perimeter of the glass balconies, turn the hotel into a
‘fairyland’ of pretty coloured light boxes, drawing guests to its atmosphere of fun and festivity.
