Photographer's Note

There are many bronze sculptures in Singapore. Some depict famous historical personalities while others lifestyles of the days gone by.

This 3-piece work entitled ‘The River Merchants’ by Aw Tee Hong is found along the Singapore River, beside the Maybank Tower near the Cavenagh Bridge. It shows Scotsman Alexander Laurie Johnston, a prominent businessman and arbitrator, mediating a case between a Chinese trader and a Malay chieftain. Johnston set up his firm, which bore his name, in 1820. The firm, which was later renamed Tanjung Tangkap, stood at the spot where the Maybank Tower is sited.
