Photographer's Note

Originally, the area where these skyscrapers now stand was a wetland, but one of the first projects undertaken by Sir Stamford Raffles was to fill it with soil from a nearby hill. An area was needed to support the substantial trading post, which was highly successful. Sometimes called the Wall Street of Asia, the financial district is home to numerous banks and financial institutions. This part of the city is perhaps the most “urban” because of the numerous skyscrapers present here. The most distinctive buildings include Suntec City, an enormous complex of office towers and buildings; the UOB Plaza and Centre; and the Convention Centre and adjacent 5-star hotels. Interestingly, in the center of the area lies the Lau Pa Sat Festival Market, and still occupies the site of the first municipal market in Singapore. Located nearby is the Cricket Club. All is meticulously maintained and landscaped. This shot was taken from the area of the City Hall on a rather cloudy day.
